The main purpose of the
project is to document the outline of a road network on and around
Monte Polizzo. Additional purposes are to find out how the roads
are constructed and how old they are. Although the roads have not
been dated, we believe they are contemporaneous with the remains
of the Elymian town on the top of Monte Polizzo. At least some of
the roads must have been built before the town was founded, so building
materials could be brought up to the mountaintop. If the roads were
already there before the town was built, this suggests that the
road network must have had an impact of the planning of the town.
The construction of the
road will also give us clues to the technological level of the Elymian
society and their means of transportation.
We believe that the mapping
part of the project is almost completed although, according to aerial
reconnaissance photos of the mountain, there might still be a few
roads stretches left to be mapped.
The project will continue
next year with excavations of selected parts of the roads. A report
of our fieldwork during 2004 will be published during this year.
We intend to publish it in both English and Italian. The fieldwork
during the year of 2005 and 2006 will also be followed up by an
annual report.
